Things You Should Remember In An Emergency First Aid Situation
It’s easy to become overwhelmed in an emergency, but if you remember the following five things, you’ll be able to handle anything.
- Assess the situation. Before you enter an emergency, assess the environment to see if it’s safe for you to enter. If so, approach the casualty and do the following.
- Introduce yourself. Before you can help the victim, you must first introduce yourself and let them know that you are trained in emergency first aid.
- Ask them questions. If the injured person is conscious, ask them questions about themselves; who they are, how they got there, and where the pain is coming from. Asking questions about their pain/injuries is crucial. If the situation escalates and they become unconscious, they won’t be able to answer these questions for themselves.
- Be kind and calm. When approaching an emergency, the worst thing you can do is panic in front of the injured person and increase their stress or anxiety. Instead, talk to them calmly and assure them that everything will be alright.
- Use your first aid training. Once you’ve assessed the situation, asked the injured individual a few questions, and called 000, then you can utilise the first aid training you learned with CK First Aid. Even if you can help the individual until the paramedics arrive, it can make a world of difference.

5 Things You Must Know When Approaching An Emergency First Aid Situation
It can be overwhelming dealing with an emergency first aid situation. However, when attempting to help, here are the five things you need to remember and do.
- Recognise the emergency. You first have to assess the situation around you and see if anyone is in trouble. If you aren’t in any danger, approach the person in crisis and begin the next steps.
- Dial 000. Although you can temporarily help the person in trouble/pain at that time, you can ultimately only do so much. If they are seriously injured or aren’t responding, dial 000 to get paramedics on the scene.
- Ask them questions. If the injured person is conscious, ask them questions about themselves, who they are, how they got there, and where the pain is coming from. Asking questions about their pain/injuries is crucial in case the situation escalates, and they become unconscious.
- Be kind and calm. When approaching an emergency, the worst thing you can do is panic in front of the injured person and make them anxious or stressed.
A Few Questions To Ask The Injured Person
If you are ever in a situation where you have to help someone who is injured, ask a few questions before administering first aid. Remember to identify yourself to the casualty, letting them know that you are certified in first aid before proceeding with the following questions.
- What happened? To get a better understanding of the situation, you have to ask the injured individual what happened. By doing this, you can get a rough idea of how the person came to be injured/in pain and in need of help.
- Are you hurt? If so, where? The next thing to do is ask them if they’re hurt. If they are, ask them where and how bad the pain is. If the pain is bearable, you can do everything you can until paramedics arrive. If the pain is severe, keep the victim calm until paramedics arrive.
- Are you allergic to any medication? This question is critical to ask, especially when the situation could escalate to where the individual is unconscious. By knowing if someone is allergic to any medication helps paramedics when they arrive on the scene.
- Do you have any medical conditions? Knowing if someone has any medical conditions is also essential to find out in case they become unconscious. Being able to tell paramedics if a patient has any allergies or medical conditions could save their life.
- Keep them talking if you can. Ask casualties their name, where they live, what they do, about their day; anything to keep the person conscious, calm, and talking. Not only will you understand their ongoing physical condition better, but you may also distract them from pain or distress.

How To Organise The People Around You
Any emergency can be overwhelming and full of panicked people. However, the easiest way to help those in such situations is to have a calm environment. To achieve this, you have to organise the people around you. Here’s how you can do that.
- Let the injured person have space. In any emergency first aid situation, it’s essential to give the injured individual space. If you see a big crowd around the individual, identify yourself as someone who can perform first aid and ask the crowd to disperse and give you and the injured casualty space.
- Ask the people around you to provide supplies if they have any/can find any. Secondly, if the injured individual is severely hurt, is losing blood, or has been knocked unconscious, ask the people around you to find supplies that could help. For example, if the injured person is losing a lot of blood from their leg, ask someone for their belt to tie around the victim’s leg to stop the blood.
- Get one person to call 000. If you are busy taking care of the injured individual from the get-go, ask someone nearby to call emergency services.
