Course Description
This course will teach you how to assist clients with taking their medication and support them in self-administering their medication using the correct method. It will also cover how to read and accurately complete medication-related documents, such as care plans and medical charts.
The session will cover topics such as verifying the care plan and client information, ensuring the accuracy of medication, including dosage and expiry dates, conducting pre and post-administration client checks, properly cleaning equipment, and following organization procedures for medication disposal and storage.
This course is suitable for community services and health workers who have the necessary authority in their state or territory to assist with medication administration. The skills taught in this course must be used according to relevant legislation, industry codes of practice and Australian/New Zealand standards. On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded an HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medication certificate.

Assessment Activities
Practical scenarios:
- Scenario 1 – Assist with medication – Asthma
- Scenario 2 – Assist with medication – Anaphylaxis
- Scenario 3 – Assist with medication – PRN Liquid Paracetamol
- Scenario 4 – Assist with medication – Eye Drops
- Scenario 5 – Assist with medication – Tablets
Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:
- Incident Report Forms
- Medication Administration Forms
Theory assessment – The student must successfully complete a written theory assessment.
The assessment is in written format and includes multiple-choice and short-answer questions. The student is required to answer all the questions.
